VOLLEYBALL SKILLS
PASSING
OVERHEAD PASSING (looks like a set but it’s different!)
PRE-CONTACT
1. Start in a ready position with your weight on the balls of your feet so you're ready to move quickly. Watch where the ball is coming from and read their body position (especially shoulders) to help predict where the ball is going.
2. As soon as the ball is served, figure out its direction and speed. Move quickly to get your body behind the ball.
3. When you arrive at the contact point, stop your feet and get balanced. Bring your hands up above and slightly in front of your forehead. Bend your knees, keep your weight forward, and stay focused on the ball. Your shoulders should be facing the ball.
DURING CONTACT
4. Open your hands wide, keeping them closer together than you would for a regular set. Keep your wrists firm and your elbows bent. Strong wrists help control the power of the incoming ball.
5. Turn your shoulders and head slightly toward your target. As the ball contacts your hands, extend your arms toward the target while using your legs to help stabilize your body. Keep your wrists strong and steady throughout the pass.
POST-CONTACT
6. Finish by following through toward your target with your hands. Regain your balance quickly and get ready for the next play, whether that's covering a teammate or preparing to attack the ball.
